At the heart of Lawrence S. Ting Foundation’s commitment to empowering and supporting the community lies a dedication to education – the main catalyst for future transformation and progress. One of our impactful Education initiatives is the Lawrence S. Ting Scholarship for Ph.D. overseas program, a testament to the Foundation’s unwavering commitment to fostering academic excellence and facilitating groundbreaking research.

The Lawrence S. Ting Scholarship for Ph.D. overseas program serves as a beacon of opportunity for aspiring scholars across various fields of study. Two scholarships will be annually awarded to support talented full-time faculty staff and lecturers who dream of pursuing advanced degrees abroad, equipping them with the tools to make meaningful contributions to their respective fields and the society at large.

Today, we are thrilled to introduce the first-ever recipient of the Lawrence S. Ting Scholarship for Ph.D. overseas program, Ms. Nguyen Thi Hoan – a dedicated lecturer at the Midwifery Faculty of the Nursing and Medical Technology Department at the HCMC University of Medicine and Pharmacy.

Currently, Ms. Hoan is pursuing a Ph.D. in Public Health, specializing in Nursing Science, at China Medical University in Taichung, Taiwan. Her academic journey is driven by an unwavering aspiration to become a distinguished researcher and educator in the field of antenatal care. Her determination for enhancing health literacy stems from her firm belief that a proactive approach, which is guiding pregnant women to develop good pregnancy health literacy, is essential to prevent serious complications for themselves and newborn babies. Her vision is to create a comprehensive program that enhances the health literacy of pregnant women, with a particular focus on physical activity, nutrition, and lifestyle, benefiting not only the expectant mothers but also the antenatal care staff.

“I truly hope that the results from my program can be the stepping-stones for the future ones ahead, where valid information on nutrition and physical activities can be distributed to pregnant women in Vietnam and antenatal care givers,” said Hoan.

The Lawrence S. Ting Scholarship for Ph.D. overseas program has not only provided Ms. Hoan with the financial support necessary to pursue her dreams but has also validated her dedication to the field of antenatal care. It exemplifies the Foundation’s commitment to nurturing the leaders and innovators of tomorrow, who are dedicated to creating positive change through rigorous research and academic excellence.

Upon completing her Ph.D. program, Nguyen Thi Hoan intends to return to Vietnam, where she will continue her role as a Midwifery lecturer at the Midwifery Faculty, Nursing and Medical Technology Department, University of Medicine and Pharmacy, Ho Chi Minh City. Her mission is to share her newfound knowledge with her students and help them develop strong research skills. By doing so, she aims to contribute significantly to the generation of high-quality professional research for the university and the broader healthcare community.

“I would advise the Nursing students who are passionate about research in the field of physical activity and nutritional diet for pregnant women always improve their English skills as well as research, through which they can read, understand, and apply new guidelines and research to this field,” said Hoan.

Lawrence S. Ting Foundation is proud to support scholars like Ms. Nguyen Thi Hoan in their pursuit of knowledge and innovation. As we celebrate the achievements of our first scholarship recipient, we look forward to witnessing the remarkable contributions she will make to the field of antenatal care and beyond.
