Can Tho was the next stop on the journey of disability assessments for children as part of the “Our Better Angels” project. Held on December 7th and 8th, 2024, at the Future Disability Education Center and the Can Tho Special Education School, the event successfully assessed 109 children.

Heartfelt Share From A Caregiver

When asked about her most memorable moment with her child, Ms. Thúy An, mother of Như Bình, shared an emotional story.

“When my child was born, every parent hopes their baby can speak, but I waited for so long, and it never came. When Như Bình was over five years old, she suddenly called out, ‘Mom, mom.’ From that moment, I knew it would be the happiest moment of my life.”

Như Bình has been diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), making communication and daily activities difficult. However, with love, support, and timely intervention from both the family and school, she has gradually improved, especially in her language skills. Như Bình’s story is just one of many where children are working hard every day to integrate into the community. It is hoped that through disability assessments, these children will receive more practical help, not only from their families and schools but also through the support of society as a whole.

Challenges In Teaching

When asked about the biggest challenges the school faces in educating children with disabilities, Ms. Phạm Thị Trinh, with 13 years of experience at the Future Disability Education Center, shared, “The biggest challenge is the teaching staff. Many of the teachers are young and mostly trained in general education, not specifically in special education. The school needs more professional support.”

It is evident that the lack of specialized knowledge and training for teachers is a significant challenge in helping improve the quality of education for children with disabilities.

The Journey Goes On

Our journey still continues with Ben Tre and Soc Trang provinces. Supporting children with disabilities in Vietnam to have the opportunity to access quality education and integrate into the community still has many challenges, but we hope through the activities, it will partly bring many pratical supprort and raise awareness to the society.
